  METU-BILTIR Intelligent Transport Systems



Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), can be defined as the application of today's emerging technologies to create the solutions for intelligent transport systems. Multi disciplinary organized teams can more successfully develop solutions for ITS applications. Interdisciplinary structure of ITS requires construction, transportation, electrical and electronics, computer, industrial and mechanical engineering and, psychology, urban and regional planning, industrial design fields as the industrial and academic area of expertise.
In recent years, very important developments have been observed in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in our country. New products and services quickly introduced to urban and suburban transport services market. In order to achieve healthy structure in this field, public identities and private sector should collaborate with universities and technopolis identities. Series of workshops was organized by Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications’ Strategy Development Department in order to determine the required national strategy.
Assessing the needs and developments in the field for the necessary research for ITS, METU, METU - Technopolis and METU-BİLTİR Center accomplished many activities on-site for AUS research where companies, researchers and practicers in this area were brought together. BILTIR Center organized a Workshop on Intelligent Transport Systems " on November 13, 2012 in cooperation with METU-Technopolis, Okan University at METU Cultural and Convention Center. The purpose of this event was to bring together METU-Academicians, METU-Technopolis’ s entitys, and ITS Implementing public institutions such as Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications’s, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, General Directorate of Highways, Turkish State Railways, General Directorate of Security in order to create efficient information sharing among the contributing parties. As a result, general knowledge of understanding among different entities of ITS was achieved under the umbrella of Okan and Middle East Technical Univercities. Nearly 20 METU Academicians have serious and concrete support for the UDHB’s Intelligent Transport Systems Strategy and Action Plan under the umbrella of METU-BILTIR Center. Turkey’s future AUS national vision is shaped with recommendations, concrete and wide angle vision on issues such as technology, application areas, the legal infrastructure areas.

METU-BILTIR Center, under the light of all these developments and studies, identifies AUS as one of Turkey’s increasingly important development area. In May 2013 METU-BILTIR Center has decided to establish METU-BILTIR Center Inteligent Transport Systems (ITS) Unit which has brought a corporate identity to all of the works done until now and for all of the future studies in the near future.

Our ITS Research Approach:
The scope and applications of ITS area contains a wide range of academic and industrial professions. Over time, different institutions and organizations (FHWA, ERTICO, IRF, etc.)set their goals and approaches which developed differences and sub-grouping for the various application areas in ITS. Intelligent Transportation Systems Unit of the METU-BILTIR Center ITS Unit has taken into account applications, infrastructure and its research priorities and plan to carry out its studies under the below mentioned 5 groups.

  • Intelligent Transport Infrastructure
  • Intelligent Traffic Management
  • Information Technology for ITS
  • Communication Systems for ITS

ITS projects that we are developing within the scope of these main groups can require one or more of the different specializations in project-specific transport (urban planning, driver psychology, product design, pavement design, and so on). Therefore, the METU-BİLTİR Center ITS Unit, can reach all the Middle East Technical University faculties, departments, institutions, centers, laboratories and aims to invite all faculty members and researchers to join to this structure.
